What is the Japanese Language Proficiency Test?

The JLPT tests the proficiency of non-native Japanese speakers. Candidates are tested in the areas of vocabulary, listening comprehension, reading comprehension and grammar.  Until 2010, the test was taken at four levels, but it was found that the gap in difficulty between levels 2 and 3 was too great. As a result, there are now five levels, with level 5 testing the most basic skills and level 1 testing the most advanced.
